A giant ice-cream cone depicting images of Eastbourne was the winner of the Great Railway Poster Competition organised by Eastbourne Framing Centre. Designed by third year Falmouth University illustration student Holly Blackman, the winner was picked from over 350 entries.

The under 16s category was won by Katie Clarke, a year 7 pupil at Cavendish School. Both posters will be displayed at London Victoria, East Croydon, London Bridge and Brighton railway stations.

Judges were looking for a vivid and engaging design inspired by classic railway posters, but entries had to reflect Eastbourne’s developing contemporary identity.

Lucy Newport, owner of the Eastbourne Framing Centre, said: “Holly captured the essence of the criteria. It was simple, clear and encompasses the town. Eastbourne Borough Council are also in talks with her in the hope that we can get her image reproduced into a large poster for the town and sold through the shop, and we hope to not stop there, with postcards, calendars and t-shirts.”

The competition was judged by Cllr Carolyn Heaps and Annie Wills of Eastbourne Borough Council; Matthew Rowe, Towner; Paul Wyborn, Southern Rail; Adam McNaught-Davis, Lindon East, and Lucy Newport. The prize giving ceremony was held at the Mayor’s Parlour at Eastbourne Town Hall this week.

The winning posters will be on tour around the town in June and July – at Eastbourne Framing Centre until June 14; at Eastbourne railway station on June 14-21; at Towner on June 21-28; at The Belgian Café on June 28–July 5, and at Eastbourne Central Library on July 5–12.
