Watch opera for free this summer when Puccini’s best-known opera Tosca is beamed live from Spain to Eastbourne this month.

Residents, visitors and tennis spectators will be treated to a free live screening of Tosca – which has enthralled opera lovers with its themes of art, love and politics since the 1900s – on the Wish Towner slopes on Monday June 13.

Starring Bryn Terfel, Oksana Dyka and Jorge de Leon, the opera will be performed at the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia and broadcasted live to 56 towns and cities from 20 countries across the continent as part of Viva Europa. Eastbourne will be one of only a couple of UK venues taking part. It is estimated the global audience will be over 80,000 people.

Eastbourne Borough Council cabinet member for tourism and leisure Cllr Neil Stanley said: “We are very excited to take part in Viva Europa for the first time, with Eastbourne joining an audience across Europe for this world famous opera. The screening is completely free and we hope that residents enjoying the tennis, as well as visitors who have come into the town to watch the sporting action at Devonshire Park, will take the chance to extend their day out and enjoy this fantastic evening performance in the natural amphitheatre of the Wish Tower slopes.”

The performance starts at 7pm GMT on June 13 2011. For more information, go to www.visiteastbourne.com or ring 08716 630031.
